Video Update January 2012

A demolition team moved onto the site of the Gardener’s pub at St Ann’s well on 2nd January and began preparations to demolish the pub itself. A week later and the bulldozers began their task to reduce the building to a pile of rubble. I visited the land which is located at the side of Kildare Road on 19th of January and took a series of photographs. Most of the trees had been removed except the main big edifice of a tree at the southern boarder.

Site of St Ann’s well, Nottingham

This video shows the latest images of the site. Preparations are now underway to carryout an archaeological excavation of St Ann’s Well, to see what artefacts can be found their.

In 1987, Mr Greenwood persuaded the site owners to allow him to carry out a trial excavation.

"I discovered substantial ruins and a wealth of pots from the ballad period. What's more, the spring water that supplied Robin Hood's Well was still flowing."

However, Mr Greenwood’s excavation was in the wrong location for the true site of St Ann’s well, and nothing of useful historic importance was found despite his claims made to the media at the time.

He believes this important site should be fully restored and developed as the Robin Hood Centre rather than Nottingham Castle.

A city council spokesman said: "Whenever dealing with Robin Hood, it is difficult to untangle fact from fiction – in many ways this is what makes him such an enduring legend.

"But there's no doubt that people today associate Robin Hood with Nottingham Castle. "Plans for a world class attraction are at a very early stage but it's felt any venue should be close to the castle site where visitors to the city centre naturally head for."
